CHAPTER 16

NATHAN

“When’s he supposed to be here?” Fiona asked. “I’ve got places to be this evening.”

“If he can’t keep himself from jerking off for half an hour, you’ve got a real winner,” I sniped. “And didn’t we say seven?”

“I want the dick,” Fiona said. “And sure, but he could come early and respect our time.”

“Or you could have given an accurate time,” I said.

“We did say seven,” Briana agreed.

“Whatever,” Fiona said.

“Not whatever,” I snapped. “I let you pick the time! It’s not my fault, and certainly not his, that you picked up a trick who won’t make more time available...”

“Well, I should still have plenty of time,” Fiona said. “This shouldn’t take long.”

“This was your idea,” I said. “You didn’t have to—”

“I’m just saying, we’re talking about the kind of guy who thinks a museum is a good date for someone like you,” she said. “I can’t imagine we’ll have much to talk about.”

I was stunned to silence for a moment. “Why wouldn’t he take someone like me to a museum?”

“You’re just not into that stuff,” Briana said.

“I like beautiful things,” I protested. “Why wouldn’t I like an art museum?”

But it rang hollow to me. Were they right? I remembered how I had felt, and how I had acted, when I realized where we were going. I had been so disappointed and so resistant—except for getting to spend time with Mark and see things he was interested in. I was only fully engaged when I realized he was bringing me to something probably only I was interested in.

Am I that shallow? Despite all my resistance and all my protests, maybe I am that dumb bimbo... And surely Mark must have seen that.

“You’re not a museum guy,” Fiona added, rolling her eyes. Then she echoed, in her own way, my inner indictment. “You’re a ‘reads Cosmo in a tub while drinking champagne’ kind of guy. You’re a ‘lays on the deck of your boyfriend’s yacht’ kind of guy. You’re a lifestyle twink—sure, with a big brain to hide, but still...”

“Okay, alright,” I said. “Maybe I was disappointed when I realized where we were going. So, yeah, I guess I’m not a museum guy, whatever the hell that is,” I said. “But you know, he sees me and knows me and figured out how to bring it all together... It was an amazing day!”

“So, you pretended to like the old dusty paintings so you could get the dick,” she said. “Groundbreaking!”

“Not that I need to defend myself, but I didn’t have to pretend at all,” I said. “It was the most thoughtful and fun date I’ve ever had... And I didn’t get the dick. I didn’t try. He actually took me to meet his parents over dinner afterwards.”

Fiona looked at me, eyes narrowing ever so slightly. “Congratulations. Sounds like your dream stalker has swallowed the hook.”

“He’s not—” Over her shoulder, I saw Mark staring at me from the checkout line, looking uncomfortable.

Fuck, did he hear anything? He couldn’t possibly have... Not from that distance.
